He. Ate. Everything .

But seriously, huskies (Samoyeds are what I’m familiar with) have loads of energy. And they get separation anxiety, which comes out as destruction. They’ll also destroy anything that gets in their way. Really, unless you can give them loads of attention and space to get that energy out, huskies probably aren’t the best idea.

I’ve had 12 GSD’s in my life. I won’t ever be without one as long as I live.

There are incredibly smart and can do pretty much anything you want them to do. But you have to WORK them, constantly. I’m talking about hundreds of hours of training in their 1st year. But in all honesty, I can say this about any dog breed.

My current GSD just turned 8 yesterday. Next year we will probably bring home a little one too.

Why leave out Malamutes???? Huskys are hyper, and german sherpards are good guard dogs. Malamutes will tell the thief where all the good stuff is as long as they give them food.

My grandmother had a Husky. That dog hated me more than I would have thought an animal was capable of doing. Pretty dogs though.

I’ve nearly gotten a German Shepherd every time I’ve gone looking for a dog, but then I always end up seeing a Rottweiler puppy and falling in love.

Kind of zero for two on useful answers here.

Yes, have trained our now 1-year-old (terrier mix) basically every single day for the last 9 months, and it has paid off compared to previous dogs that we weren’t so serious about. A huge joy to take places and live with, as a result.

I’ve always had Shepherds, great dogs but they require a lot of time and effort. They need constant exercise and activity plus a good amount of training. In short, if you treat them right they’re as good as you can get from a dog.

Our husky is simultaneously the smartest and dumbest dog in existence. Also, she makes an excellent fuzzy pillow for naps.

Huskies need a lot of exercise and attention. I would not recommend a husky to anyone that doesn’t have a large fenced-in back yard or the time and ability to take them for 30 minutes walks.

On my third GSD. Great dogs. Can have alpha issues - you have to make sure they know their place in the pack. Unlimited energy. Super smart. Shot loads of hair. They pick a person to be their person - they will love and adore the whole family (pack), but they will have only one person to call their own.

Males will easily hit 100 or more lbs. many people are affraid of them - you won’t get people asking you to pet them nearly as often if you had a lab or a golden. You will while they are puppies, but not past 12-18 months of age.

Best dogs in the world :)

Had 2 Huskies, and I can agree with everything Party-vi said: they need TONS of attention, and exercise. Otherwise they’ll be chaotic and won’t behave. At the same time I’ve never met a smarter dog in my life, I’m talking about teaching my little guy how to open the sliding glass door to let himself out to go potty and close it back. But, as with kids, they learn from observing. Mine ended up learning how to operate lever doors and normal knobs, which ensues hilarity. They are so smart they play pranks on each other; my older one opened the garage door (not the car door, the one to the inside of the house) and ran inside the garage while the younger one followed. After the young one got in, the older one bolted back outside before the (self-closing) door shut. Leaving the young one stuck inside the garage for 3 hours. They’ll learn words faster than you can teach them, but that also means they learn vet or shots or vaccines as much as they’ll learn walk, park, trip, or run. If I could have any other dog again, it’d be a Husky. Never have I seen such loving dogs. And annoying, because yes they can also pretend to be stupid until you pull out a treat. They have so much character.

I once rented a room from a girl who had a German Shepard. Had to lock my bedroom door cause it figured out how to use doorknobs...

I have a fenced in medium sized backyard, and I'm totally willing to spend at least an hour a day on vigorous exercise. Did you get you husky from a breeder/adoption center in the DC area??

I’d consider them but I can't find any around me!

Definitely something to consider, my backyard isn't HUGE but it is fenced in and I'm definitely planning on lots of long walks.

GSD’s seem to be slightly “easier” than huskies, but it's gonna be great to have a dog that I can take hiking, running, etc. I'm looking at adopting so sadly I'll probably be missing the puppy stages.

Sounds like I'll be in for a lot with a husky! That's incredible though, having a smart dog seems very rewarding.

First off, beautiful dog! I’ve liked GSD’s since I was a small kid, my grandparents had one at their place and I loved playing with it whenever I would visit. The loyalty they have is amazing, and something I'd love to have around my house

I think he just picked it up. Super smart, didn’t behave at all. Got into the raccoon-proof garbage in the kitchen all the time, tore up carpets, etc. She also had to padlock his kennel cause he could always figure out how to open them.

Ultimately I think he just had more energy than she was prepared to deal with. She also had a pretty old sheltie, and she gave them both the same amount of exercise.

I love my Aussie shepherd:

Kinja'd!!!

She has tons of energy, but I love her. There's something to be said for being forced to spend time every day that doesn't directly benefit you. We crate trained her in a couple days, house trained in a couple weeks, and take her everywhere we can to get her comfortable around people and other dogs.

Great looking dog, glad you’re having a nice experience with her. I like what you said about spending time everyday on something that doesn’t directly benefit myself, I think that's something we all need a little more of.

It sort of comes down to whether you want a dog that's super intelligent and hard working or if you want a dog whose only trick is doing this all day:

I had my boys shipped in from Tennessee. Best decision I made. My gf thought so too, until they destroyed a lamb and two tables. lol
